Overview

Every year, millions of lower-wage workers travel long distances to jobs that exist just miles from their homes. The Commute Converter helps companies match and swap employees across nearby branches, cutting travel costs, saving time, and improving employee well-being.

The Problem

Most commuting systems are built for those with cars or corporate flexibility, leaving low-income workers to absorb the highest time and fuel costs—often spending 10–20% of their total income just to reach work, compared to under 3% for higher-income professionals. This daily burden traps millions in a cycle of poverty they cannot escape, where the cost of simply getting to work prevents them from saving, studying, or moving upward. It effectively turns distance into one of the biggest barriers to opportunity in modern America.

The Idea

The Job Swap Program uses a data-driven matching system to reassign employees to the closest available workplace—first within a company, then across industry partnerships.
By cutting a 40-minute commute to 10 minutes, workers save up to 250 hours and $3,500 per year, gain time for education or family, and employers benefit from a more loyal, stable workforce.
